Mauterndorf tour: Mauterndorf Castle & the Medieval Festival

Our small picturesque town of Mauterndorf is known for its medieval castle, Burg Mauterndorf, which was built in the 13th century. Once used as a toll station, the castle is now a popular tourist attraction and the Medieval Festival, which is well known in German-speaking countries, also takes place there every year.

During the festival, the streets of Mauterndorf are transformed into a medieval setting where vendors sell traditional goods such as leatherwork, pottery and jewellery. Visitors can also enjoy a variety of medieval activities such as archery, sword fighting, and jousting tournaments.

The festival features live music, dance performances and theatrical performances, all inspired by the Middle Ages. Visitors can also witness demonstrations of traditional crafts and skills such as blacksmithing and weaving. One of the highlights of the festival is Mauterndorf Castle, which serves as a stunning backdrop to the event. The castle hosts various activities and shows, including medieval banquets and jousting tournaments.

In addition to the castle, Mauterndorf also offers its visitors a range of other outdoor activities such as archery, hiking, cycling and skiing. Additionally, Mauterndorf has a couple of really excellent restaurants and cafes where visitors can enjoy traditional Austrian cuisine and local specialities.

Mauterndorf is a great place to spend a whole day. Be it a leisurely stroll through the old streets, a helicopter flight with Thomas Morgenstern, a visit to Mauterndorf Castle, or a delicious coffee at the Kaffee Stegmühle. A visit is always worthwhile and the great vantage points invite you to dream and enthuse.
