9 Lungau Ski areas close by Eden 44 Top 5

Your heart beats for winter and from the first snowflake you can't think of anything else but fun on the slopes, #powpow and après ski? Or are you or your kids still newbies to skiing and you would like to finally learn to ski and snowboard in a quiet atmosphere? Then we have a match - because the Eden 44 Top 5 Apartment is perfectly located for this project. In the immediate vicinity there are 9 ski areas: from small to huge, there is something for everyone!

9 ski areas within 30 minutes? No joke - see for yourself which ski areas you can reach in just 30 minutes from the apartment in this google map. Below you will find a brief description of all nine areas and the current ski pass prizes.

1+2 Katschberg & Aineck

  • Area Size: Big

  • Distance from the apartment: 17 or 24 Minutes

  • Website: www.katschberg.at

  • Skipass prize for an adult: 54€ (Prize shown on website: 06.11.22)

Katschberg is probably one of the most famous mountains when it comes to skiing. The mountain is right on the border between Lungau and Carinthia. The so called "Katschi" has 16 lifts and a total of 70 km of slopes. To get to the Katschberg, you can either take the lift up to the Aineck in St. Margarethen and continue from there to Katschberg, or you can drive directly on the mountain via the Katschbergstraße.

The mountain, which is popular among people from Carinthia and Lungau, has something to offer for everyone, whether beginner, pro or family, a smile is guaranteed to be put on your face.

It is said that you can find the widest slopes of Carinthia on the Katschberg and there is also a so called parking space guarantee for its guests. The Katschberg is always well visited, so it is a good idea to get there as early as possible and hit the slopes in the morning with the first lifts.

3. Grosseck-Speiereck

  • Area Size: Middle

  • Distance from the apartment: 15 Minuten

  • Website: https://grosseck-speiereck.at

  • Skipass prize for an adult: 50€ (Prize taken from the website: 06.11.22)

The Grosseck-Speiereck is one of my favorite mountains. There you can not only go hiking and paragliding in summer, but also snowboarding and skiing in winter. The mountain peak can be reached from two sides by lift: either with the Sonnenbahn from St. Michael, or with the Panoramabahn from Mauterndorf. The shorter way from the the Eden 44 Top 5 Apartment is the one to Panoramabahn in Mauterndorf.

In contrast to Katschberg and Obertauern, the ski area is smaller, but in no way inferior to the others when it comes to fun on the slopes! The Grosseck-Speiereck is roughly the same in size as the Fanningberg, although I would classify Speiereck as "more sporty" because there are a few steeper and more kind of freeride slopes here. Perfect for boarders and skiers who also like to ski in deep snow or in an extremely sporty/fast manner.

A ski rental, supermarket and ski school are also on site.

4. Fanningberg

The Fanningberg is probably one of the most popular ski areas in Lungau if you want to have fun on the slopes with the whole family. The pistes are wide and partly pleasantly flat, so even the little ones can have loads of fun.

Ski and snowboard instructors also have enough space to teach beginners the fine art of skiing on two boards. The size of the Fanningberg is the same as that of the Grosseck-Speiereck, although there are clearly easier and more child-friendly slopes here.

There is also a ski school and a ski rental directly on the Fanningberg.

5. Obertauern

Everyone knows the Obertauern. Back then, the Beatles liked to be guests and even today the ski area still has its very special “WOW” factor. With 26 (!) modern lifts, this ski area guarantees an unforgettable day of skiing. Once at the top of the mountains, you have a wonderful panorama, which you can often admire on Instagram. Take a look at the interactive piste map here - you can see how extensive this ski area is:

Obertauern is also unbeatable when it comes to all the extras. Shopping, ski rental and après ski - you will find everything here in one place and in the best #winterwonderland atmosphere. Obertauern is definitely worth a visit, with or without Bier-Seitl and Après Ski afterwards ;-)

6. Kreischberg

  • Area Size: Big

  • Distance from the apartment: 30 Minutes

  • Website: https://www.kreischberg.at

  • Skipass prize for an adult: 52€ (Prize taken from website: 06.11.22)

The ski area on and around the Kreischberg is equally popular with families and skiers. Some investments were made in 2021 and so you can now be transported up the mountain with a super modern 10-seater gondola lift. There are a total of 14 lifts and around 42 kilometers of pistes on Kreischberg.

For the little ones there is a magic carpet, a dinosaur world and much more to successfully master the first turns on the slopes.

There is also a great activity for non-skiers: tubing. You swing down a slope on a tire at full speed. With the tubing lift you are then comfortably pulled back up the hill.

Also interesting if you don't like skiing or snowboarding: There are two magical winter hiking trails that last between 1 and 2 hours.

The slopes start operating at 8:30 a.m. and you can also conveniently book your ski pass online. In addition, families only pay for 2 children, each additional youngster is free!

Cool, right?

7. Tockneralmlift Krakauebene - Krakauhintermühlen

The Krakauhintermühlen ski area is small but really nice. Here you can practice your first turns on 3 kilometers of slopes, race down the pistes with your minis in peace or gain your first snowboarding experience. 2 lifts take you comfortably up the mountain and if you still need equipment, you can also rent equipment on site.

Families with children feel particularly at home here, as the area is quiet and small. There is also a ski school here and for non-skiers there are great winter hiking trails and cross-country ski runs.

8. Schönfeld/Bundschuh

Area Size: Small

Distance from the apartment: 30 Minutes

Prize for an adult: 28€ (Price from 2021 from website: 13.11.22)

In Schönfeld/Bundschuh there is a small but fine ski area. This small winter Mecca, which can be reached from a bit of a winding road, is ideal for beginners as well as real sports fans who want to make their turns in peace and quiet. Since there is no mass tourism here, there is plenty of space to let off steam. Ski Newcomers can practice their first turns comfortably and without pressure, kids can have fun without fear and stress. 2 lifts and 3 slopes await you in this quiet and beautifully located ski area.

You won't find après ski and shops here. A true jewel for all those who want to enjoy the peace and nature.

9. Lessach

Area size: Small

Distance from the apartment: 13 Minutes

Prize for an adult: 20€ (Prize taken from lungau.at)

In Lessach there is a very small ski area with a drag lift, which is operated by the local ski club. Perfect for covering a few kilometers of slopes with your kiddos. The ski area is only lightly frequented. Excellent for all those who are on skis for the first time.

By the way: You can rent the 550 meter long drag lift alone, with friends, or your family for a whole or half day.
